Regugee Crisis

From the jury:  "A technical drawing with the ironic title Housing of the Year earned Mickael Minghetti the second prize in the international student competition Drawing of the Year 2016. The drawing shows a refugee tent and is a highly relevant and political drawing commenting on the current refugee crisis.

The jury described Minghetti’s drawing as a brutal, humorous, and extremely honest reminder that one of the most difficult challenges architecture face is the ability to address the urgencies the world produces."

Thomas Moore imagined a utopian island based on humanistic ideals in 1516. Today, part of our ideals seem to rely on technological advancement. Utopias are imagined by engineers: futuristic cities, smart houses, mass production, automation… The consequences of these progresses are invisible in the area where they are applied: the production zones are delocalised outside our cities. This drawing superimposes production and product, the utopia and its fabrication.

Utopia Mecanica

This drawing was produced following visits to some experimental post-war housing projects in Rotterdam. Those buildings are often considered exemplary in their success or failure. They become ‘fixed point of memory’ as phrases Aldo Rossi. The memory is partial. The precise geometries become vague, the lines are blurred. Perspective are distorted. Elements which imprinted my memory are collected and appear together. It has no longer the objective shape of a city, but the subjective shape of a cité, as defined by Richard Sennett. When drawing new realities, the past invades the flesh of the hand. It is an unconscious force that guides the pencil in unforeseen directions.

These drawings were created to communicate multiple layers of informations simultaneously, from spacial composition and scale to functionality and technical details. We used color to highlight certain functions, such as eating, cooking, chilling, and sleeping. This limited set of drawings allowed us to communicate with potential users and engineers.
